The Directors
Ray Hawthorne established his own business in Perth, Western Australia, after heading up the design department for one of WA's leading building companies for a number of years. On moving to Christchurch, Ray joined forces with fellow director, Terry Duff, and established Hawthorne Duff Architecture Ltd in New Zealand.
By travelling throughout the United Kingdom and the United States, Ray has studied the latest design concepts and details of design styles and the use of materials from abroad, and applies these to local conditions to maximise both effect and efficiency in the building.
Terry Duff gained his interest in building design by joining the industry at the grass roots level in the Duff family business, Canterbury Concrete Cutting. By combining his knowledge of this, the most fundamental of building materials, with experience gained in contract building and property development, the move to architectural design was a natural progression.
Having a flair for design and a natural ability in understanding the technology available, Terry has developed a recognisable style in his work. His interest in the optimal use of technology has resulted in requests from the developers of AP Design software to assist with further development of the packages available, both in New Zealand and Australia.
